POLISAS
or Politeknik Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah ( Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Polytechnic) is located on the east coast of peninsular Malaysia in a city called Kuantan, in the state of Pahang Darul Makmur. Its campus is situated approximately 15 kilometers from the Kuantan and 270 kilometers from the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.
Kuantan, Pahang Darul Makmur is widely known for its beautiful beaches along the South China Sea. Many visitors from all over the world had stayed in its wonderful and beautiful chalets, resorts and hotels to experience that exciting feeling. 2.0 The History
POLISAS was formerly known as Kuantan Polytechnic when it first founded in 1976. The name Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah is chosen in the honor of the Royal Highness the Sultan of Pahang, K.D.Y.M.M. Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah on 9 November 1985. The main objective set by the Malaysian government for this polytechnic is to provide trained workers for the semi professional workforce in the engineering and commerce sectors. It is administrated by the Department of Technical Education, under the supervision by the Ministry of Education of Malaysia.
POLISAS is the second polytechnic founded in Malaysia after its predecessor Politeknik Ungku Omar (Ungku Omar Polytechnic) which was founded in Ipoh. Perak Darul Ridzuan in 1969. During its early years, POLISAS only offers three courses; Certificate in Civil Engineering (Construction), Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Power) and Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (General). The enrollment increased from 120 students in 1976 to nearly 1500 students in 1998. Nowadays, there are 19 courses offered at POLISAS, ranges from Certificate in Food Technology to Diploma in Electronic Communication. Only Malaysian citizens can enrolled in these polytechnics.
The architecture course at POLISAS is one of many courses offered at diploma and certificate level. The architecture course is under the Department of Civil Engineering (Jabatan Kejuruteraan Awam), maybe the ONLY one architecture course in the world under a civil engineering department. It will take two years including a six months practical training period for certificate level and three years including a six months practical training period for diploma level.
Using semester system, the course is divided into two semesters for a year. During the first year, architecture students will learn basics and fundamental skills in architecture such as freehand drawing, technical drawing, drafting, working drawing, construction materials and methods, design and computer-aided drafting. In the second year, which includes a six months practical training, the architecture student will learn more about design, building services, architectural structures, architectural practice and computer-aided drafting. For diploma level, architecture student will learn more about advanced design, structures for architect, landscape architecture, history of architecture, measured drawings and computer-aided drafting and presentation.
With lecturers, ranges from a variety of disciplines in architecture, teaching and working experiences. This situation always creates an integration of opinions and methods in providing the best knowledge and education in architecture for its students.
Eight architectural studios, a CADD computer lab, a presentation workshop and an exhibition area are the facilities available for the architecture course in POLISAS. In addition, there are a timber and brick workshop, a concrete laboratory and a survey laboratory shared by all the students in the Civil Engineering Department.
Nowadays, graduates from the architecture course in POLISAS had gone far from where they started long time ago. Some had already achieved success in their architectural career, while other is still travelling in the path of glory. But still, some of the students enrolled in the architecture course in POLISAS had gone on to another path in order to achieve their goals.
